The Virtual Health Library represents an expansion of
the current model of technical cooperation in health sciences information by promoting the
production of multimedia
information sources, connected in network with direct and universal access
with no geographical or time barriers. Its decentralized operation will allow the
institutions participating in the Latin American and Caribbean System on Health Sciences
Information to master strategic technologies and increasing equal access to health
information
During the IV Pan American Congress of Information in Health Sciences, held
in Costa Rica in March of 1998, the participants of the Latin American and Caribbean
System approved the San José Declaration towards the Health Virtual Library. In
it, they recognize the importance of the Health Virtual Library to improve the health
conditions of the people of the Region and commit themselves to making joint efforts for
their construction.
It is with great satisfaction that the Pan American Health Organization joins
these efforts and publishes a selection of papers presented at the IV Congress. As a
whole, this book
establishes a framework of the Health Virtual Library.
