SCAD is the Virtual Health Library's Cooperative
Service for Accessing Documents, an automated and descentralized
document delivery system coordinated by BIREME. The purpose
of SCAD is to provide efficient document delivery service
among libraries and users in the Latin American and Caribbean
Region.
New users or libraries need to register in SCAD
before first using this service, filling out the registration
form.
Users are asked to select the delivery method
when filling in the request form. The available options are:
mail (regular mail), fax, e-mail (pdf or tiff format) or Ariel.

How
much does service cost?
|
|
SCAD service charges refer to each request, and
vary in accordance with:
1
The number of pages of the requested document;
The place where the request is fulfilled: libraries
of the BIREME Network, or other network (National
Library of Medicine and British Library); and
Delivery methods: Mail/E-mail/Ariel or Fax.
Please see
table of charge.

SCAD registered requests can be fulfilled by
a "BIREME network" library or by "other
network" libraries.
:
it includes BIREME library and SCAD Cooperating Libraries,
in Latin American and the Caribbean Region. In case
of the automatic request from database search (VHL or
Pubmed), the system indicates the library options automatically.
: it includes
international systems such as the National Library
of Medicine (Docline Service) and British Library
(BLDSC Service). Requests can be forwarded to other
network if they are unfilled by the libraries of the
BIREME network.
The automatic requests (from Pubmed or VHL´s
databases) are route automatically to a library from
BIREME network.
SCAD does not guarantee that all requests will be
fulfilled, even those for documents retrieved through
the MEDLINE or LILACS databases. Nevertheless, the
average of fulfilled requests reached 80% in the last
years. Causes of unfilled requests include: requested
documents do not belong to SCAD cooperating library
holdings; incomplete or inaccurate data of requested
document, etc.
Users should checked the delivery service process
through the search module of the SCAD System.
